CAREERS IN FASHION DESIGNING
INTRODUCTION
The word ‘fashion’ immediately conjures up images of
glitz and glamour. Fashion design is the applied
art devoted to the designing of clothing and lifestyle accessories. This art is
influenced by cultural and social attitudes and has evolved over time and
place. Fashion designing has come a long way from the designer clothes worn by
the royalty of the ancient world to the haute couture products of the present.
Fashion Designing is concerned with designing
apparels and accessories for men, women and children. Other that clothes,
fashion designing includes designing of jewellery, footwear, bags and other
accessories.
Fashion designing is one of the
most lucrative, appealing, glamorous and exciting career options in today's
world. If one has a penchant for creativity, style and originality, a career in
fashion designing is the one tailor made for you. On one hand, the fashion
industry satisfies both the creative fancies and the materialistic needs of the
people. On the other hand, it promises glamour, fame, success and a high pay
package to the talented people.
In India, the fashion industry has
just begun to come of age. As it is still in its fledgling stage, it offers
plenty of opportunities for enthusiastic, talented and hard working youngsters. Indian
fashion is gaining a lot of popularity abroad because of cheap labour and
excellent craftsmanship. Many top Indian designers are now catering to this
growing international demand for quality fashion products and accessories.
Prospects for fashion design
graduates are pretty good thanks to the huge and still growing demand for
“designer wear” and the equally large volume of exports. Until a few years ago, there was not a
single Indian name in the global fashion scene. However with the establishment
of NIFT and some other fashion schools, a band of gifted designers is already
making its mark on the fashion firmament. Today names like Ritu Kumar, Ritu
Beri, Rohit Bal, Satya Paul, Sunit Verma, JJ Vallaya and Tarun Tahiliani have virtually become
household names – what with the media showcasing their talent across
double-page spreads in glossy mags and sundry fashion-related programmes on TV.
NATURE
OF WORK
A fashion designer creates
clothing, including dresses, suits, pants and skirts, and accessories such as
shoes, for consumers. One can specialize in clothing, accessory or jewellery
design. Some designers work in all three areas. Another area of specialization
is costume design for those who want to create wardrobes for television, movie
and theatre productions
CONDITIONS OF WORK
The work of a fashion designer is
both competitive and stressful. Constant excitement, limelight and glamour set
the tone for work. Considerable time is spent standing, working on large
worktables. The work involves teamwork. Fashion shows require perseverance over
long periods of time. There is considerable travel involved during fabric
selection, analysing fashion trends, fashion displays. Hectic work pressure
evolves during fashion shows. Fashion designers
employed by manufacturing establishments, wholesalers, or design firms
generally work regular hours in well-lighted and comfortable settings.
Designers who freelance generally work on a contract, or job basis. They
frequently adjust their workday to suit their clients' schedules and deadlines,
meeting with the clients during evening or weekend hours when necessary.
Freelance designers tend to work longer hours and in smaller, more congested,
environments, and are under pressure to please clients and to find new ones in
order to maintain a steady income. Regardless of their work setting, all
fashion designers occasionally work long hours to meet production deadlines or
prepare for fashion shows.
